Ryefield Distribution Boards

The name of the Ryefield board is sometimes used in the same way as Biro and Hoover. In other words, a brand name is used as a description of the item. Ryefield is a manufacturer of electrical distribution boards and, as the market leader, so the term ‘ryefield board’ is used at times to describe any distribution board.

What is a Ryefield Distribution Board?

In short, it is a sturdily built, lockable and sealable system that is used to distribute a three phase or single phase electrical supply to several locations. It is normally used to distribute electricity from the main cut-out to individual meters. Each meter has its own individual protection.

They are produced to handle a variety of different capacities from as few as three ways to the specialist 48 way boards. They usually are sold pre-fitted with a 60 or 100 amp service fuse.

The reason that Ryefield boards are seen as the market leaders is that they do exactly the job they are supposed to at a good price. We have heard them being described by other electricians in London as being ‘bombproof’ or ‘built like a battleship’.

Key Features

They are built from 18g steel sheets, protected by an epoxy powder enamelled coating and pre-drilled for fitting to the wall. The busbars have a 400A rating and the board’s standard main brass clamps accept stranded conductors of up to 120mm but are adjustable for smaller conductors. Each fuse unit has an individual pinching screw neutral circuit terminal. All of the steel screws and components are zinc plated to protect against corrosion.

Who Needs a Ryefield Distribution Board?

If you are the owner or manager of an HMO (house of multiple occupation), you will be very familiar with the Ryefield distribution board as it is the only one that is approved for use by the DNOs (distribution network operators) for such applications. Installing anything other than this board will cause you a headache as it would need ripping out and replacing before you are granted your licence!

But we have never heard any of our landlord clients complain as they are the most cost-effective solution on the market. They would have bought this board even if we hadn’t recommended it!

It’s not just Landlords who use these distribution boards, there are many other applications.

Developers who have constructed new build properties with several flats or converted larger properties into individual flats use them to split the supply to the individual flats or apartments.

Owners and managers of commercial or industrial properties with an incoming three-phase supply that needs to be divided up to large consumers like cookers, air conditioning systems, production lines, lifts etc.

Restaurants and hotel owners and managers who need to ditribute incoming supplies to different areas such as kitchens, laundries, lifts and so on.

Who can fit a Ryefield Board?

For most electricians, fitting distribution boards is not a regular job. It needs an qualified and experienced electrician who is familiar with the requirements of splitting the incoming supply correctly. Almost any electrician could look at the specs of a Ryefield board and figure out its principles, however, there is much more to installing one than that.

Here at South London Electricians, we have over 25 years of experience in commercial electrics. Our electricians are fully qualified and experienced with the installation of distribution boards in HMOs, garages, factories, hotels and many other places too.
