Sutton Area Home EV charging Point

If you own an electric vehicle (EV), and you’re thinking about installing an EV charger at your home in Sutton, this article is for you. If you haven’t quite made the decision, considering the advantages of home electric vehicle charging is a good starting point.

Firstly, there is the convenience. Using public charging points can sometimes be tricky to find in Sutton. As more and more people choose an electric car or vehicle, there is more pressure on the available public charging points. In short, you may have to look around to find one that isn’t in use.

Secondly, there is the cost. Charging at home is generally cheaper. You can take advantage of low overnight tariffs, in some cases, it can halve the cost of a full charge.

A third key advantage is the speed of charging. Using an ordinary wall socket is OK, but you need to leave the vehicle for a day or so in order to get a full charge. There are dangers with doing this – someone could trip over the flex and either rip it from the socket or fall and break a wrist or something like that. Ripping the plug out of the socket could damage either the plug, the socket or even both, leaving you with an electrical emergency. Also, 13A wall sockets are not really designed to handle large currents for long periods of time. Thus, installing a home EV charge point makes perfect sense.

As well as off-street parking, a home charging point will require a dedicated new circuit adding to your home’s electrical installation. This will need to be certified under part P of BS7671 and should be installed by a qualified electrician.

What are you waiting for! Call us on 07956 523316 – you will talk directly to one of our qualified electricians for Bromley. This means you don’t have to explain what you want to a receptionist, wait for a call back and go over the same stuff again with the electrician. Less hassle for you. You make an appointment with the electrician at a time that suits you best. The electrician is local to Bromley, so you don’t need to waste time explaining how to get to your property. We are Part P accredited and can issue your certificate immediately.

If your Sutton home car charger is not installed by a part P certified electrician, you will need to apply for the certificate yourself. This is a slow and annoying process.

Different chargers for different cars

The charging point you choose depends mainly on the battery capacity of your electric vehicle. If yours has a small to medium capacity battery, a 16A rated charger should suffice. This gives effectively a 3 kW charging point and will be a little faster than a normal socket which is a 2 kW charge point. For larger vehicles or faster charging, a 32A circuit is used. This gives a 7 kW charge point.

Another decision that needs to be made is the type of charge point. There are two types of electric vehicle charging point – tethered and plug-in. The tethered EV charging points are specific to your electric vehicle. The cable is permanently attached to the wall unit and the other end is fitted with the plug type that fits your electric vehicle. The cable unrolls from the wall to your vehicle. Between charging, the plug and cable is stored with the charging point. The disadvantage of this is that if you change vehicle, you may need to change the plug. Also, you will still need to carry a loose charging lead in your car to charge away from home.

The plug-in type of charging point is cheaper and potentially more versatile. You use the lead that comes with your car and plug into the dedicated wall socket. The wall socket of an EV charging point clamps the plug in place, meaning the plug won’t be pulled out if someone catches the lead.
