Fire Safety Legislation

UK fire safety legislation applies to businesses, HMOs and other rental properties including blocks of flats as well as public buildings. Once installed, like any electrical equipment and systems, emergency lighting and fire detection systems need regular checking, testing and maintaining. Your emergency lighting needs to be checked at least once per year. Your fire detection system must be serviced twice per year. In both cases, the testing and servicing must be carried out by a competent person.

Call us on 07956 523316 now to find out how we can help you to comply with fire safety legislation. We have the experience and knowledge to test and maintain any emergency lighting and fire alarm system. Since we are based in Croydon, we can have an engineer on site fast. When you call, you speak directly to an electrician, thus removing the need to wait for a call back.

Croydon Emergency Lighting Testing

Emergency lighting serves several functions. It illuminates escape routes, allows occupants to locate firefighting equipment and can aid emergency services to more easily locate and evacuate trapped and injured occupants. Emergency lighting systems need to be one hundred percent functional at all times. To achieve this, the legislation demands a full test annually and a ‘flick test’ monthly. Remember, this must be done by a competent person.

Our team are fully qualified time-served electricians. Don’t leave things to chance, call us on 07956 523316 to chat about your requirements and how we can help. We check all parts of your systems to make sure they are working to the appropriate British Standards requirements.

How does emergency lighting work?

The lights (technically called luminaries) are powered by rechargeable batteries. Thes batteries are kept topped up from the mains supply. When mains power is lost, the batteries are used to keep the luminaries alight for at least one hour, generally more. Luminaries fall into two categories – maintained and non-maintained. Put simply, maintained luminaries are always on whilst non-maintained luminaries only come on when the power in your Croydon premises goes off.
